This academic nude recalls the figure drawings and paintings of Thomas Eakins, both Sheppard and Eakins were students at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
William H. C. Sheppard, lived primarily in Philadelphia where he was a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but also studied in Paris as a student at the Academie Julian with Gustave Bouguereau and the Ecole Des Beaux Arts with Jean-Leon Gerome.
His work has been on exhibtion in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts annual, 1890-92, 1896-1902, 1930-34; Paris Salon, 1899; Salons of America, 1934; American Artists Professional League, 1939-40; Currier Gallery Art; Cape May, New Jersey, 1946-51; and the Terry Art Institute, 1951.
